Daytime Emmy Awards

It was decided that daytime shows deserved their own awards ceremony and the first Daytime Emmy Awards show took place in 1974. It soon became an established fixture and an important event for the television networks. Viewers like to see if their favorite soap opera has won and they root for their favorite soap star. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences present the awards and there are several categories for prizes.

The shows have been broadcast from various venues, mostly in New York City. These have included the Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden. They have also taken place in the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. There is a lot of competition between the different networks to get the top Emmy Awards for daytime. The top prize of Outstanding Drama Series has been won the most times by General Hospital, which is the longest running daytime soap in the US. It is way out in front with a total of nine wins.

The Lead Actor in a Drama Series section was won by Macdonald Carey in the first show in 1974. This was for his part as Tom Horton in Days of our Lives. Christian LeBlanc was the winner in 2007 for his role in The Young and the Restless as Michael Baldwin. The Lead Actress award was given to Elizabeth Hubbard as Althea Davis in The Doctors in 1974 and to Maura West as Carly Tenney Snyder in As the World Turns. Other categories for Daytime Emmy Awards include Outstanding Talk Show and awards for directing and writing. In 2007, it was a double award for comedian Ellen Degeneres when she won the Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host and the program also won for Outstanding Talk Show.

In addition to awards for performances, there are the Creative Arts Daytime Emmys. Every TV show is a team effort and a lot of work goes on behind the scenes. This contribution is recognized in a number of awards for technical skills. Categories for these awards for Daytime Emmys include Costume Design, Hairstyling, Make Up, Editing, and Music Direction and Composition.
